Gordon paused and continued sitting still again, thinking. "So they're going to find out... It's fate, isn't it? Can't be changed, they will find out, and then it will be a race." Gordon was reminded now an argument he and Goldeye had had several years ago now - one they had never discussed since. His hands fiddled with each other upon his desk, a clear indicator of stress and anxiety.
"So does that mean you're going to tell them?" He raised his eyes to Goldeye, his expression was part anger and part sadness.

"I don't see how else they're going to find out," Goldeye said plainly. "They could break into the Department of Mysteries or torture either one of us, or I could tell them. And I can tell them a select amount, to ensure Fate is fulfilled but you have the advantage, if you prefer."
Lies, really. He'd tell them both what they needed to know. He was Fate's tool and Fate did not play favorites. What was it that guy said? God does not play dice with the universe, or something. Different meaning all together, but Goldeye liked dice.

"But why would you tell them?" Gordon protested. "Shouldn't a prophecy reflect what's going to happen, rather than dictate it? You wouldn't get a prophecy saying that the happiest man on earth was about to kill himself, because that wouldn't happen. You would tell them regardless of whether the prophecy told you that you would... wouldn't you?"
Gordon felt like he knew what Goldeye was going to say next, but he needed to wrap his own head around it.

"Would I?" he whispered. "Would you?" He glanced around the room, nervous once again. "Not even the smartest men know the truth behind these things, but Prophecies play a role in the same Prophecy they tell." He stared into Gordon's forehead, rather fiercely.
"Gordon, Prophecies tell us what will happen in the future. What we do in the future is based on what happened in the past, correct? And the Prophecy happened in the past. They are weapons of Fate. Pieces on the board. Sometimes it's better not to attempt to understand the game we must be playing. It's a complicated issue, Gordon, and I insist you read my book if you are interested. Any one of them. They're still bestsellers. I did get an Order of Merlin First Class for them, but whatever, feel free to argue with me."

Gordon shook his head. "I wasn't--" He sighed, got up from his chair and began pacing the room.
"Is there anything else you know?" He asked hopefully. "When is the baby due? Who is the father? Where is Juliet now, or where will she be? What do we do now?"

"You are making the mistake of presuming Prophercies tell you anything," Goldeye said dryly. "They tell you enough to make you realize you don't know. But never what you need to know, you know?" He stood up and seemed to stare at Gordon for a long moment, standing rather awkwardly.
"I suppose I should be going."

A forlorn gaze lingered between Gordon and Goldeye. "Yes, yes I suppose so." Gordon said finally. "I think I have a long night ahead of me." A lot of thinking.

Goldeye stared at Gordon for a long moment, turned and walked across the office in what he thought was the longest time. He opened the door and went through it. As he stood in the open doorway, his knuckles white on the doorknob, his eyes floated over to Gordon's, filled with something like fear or regret.
"Goodbye Gordon," he said with an air of finality, then closed the door with a gentle click. He hurried through the Ministry, wishing he could change Fate.
