A Memorable Conversation

"Why give me the list?" Suki asked curiously, frowning slightly. "You said yourself that members shouldn't know each other." Her mind was still swimming with questions about this whole issue. She wasn't even thinking about whom she was talking to anymore, not worrying about what he thought or would say.

[Nickarlen "Goldeye" Torlen]

"Quite true," he admitted. "But that would make recruitment rather difficult, unless there was...Oh, oh, OH!" A huge smile spread across the Professor's face as realization hit him. "This works out quite well, doesn't it? Oh yes, yes." His legs kicked lazily off the edge of the roof.

"Would you be a part of the group? Would you help chart it's morals? Be it's compass?" He didn't intend for a single person to lead the group, but it needed those would be inevitably respected. He had to write some letters, clearly.

Blinking at his outburst, Suki tilted her head, brushing her hair away. "I will join, though I don't know how much use I'll be in the long run. My abilities and knowledge are limited." she murmured. "But I'm not really sure I quite understand what you're meaning me to do." she said slowly, a deep frown pulling at her lips, eyes hard and searching. She was more sociable, but she still felt lost around people. But then again she was sure many felt lost around Goldeye and many of the other teachers at Hogwarts.

"Well I..." Goldeye's eyes seemed to gloss over and turn sad. "Oh, nevermind. Just the rantings of an old man. As you get older, you want to do more and more things, to give your life meaning, but you can only do less and less." He swung his legs lazily over the side of the roof, kicking the wall.

"It was pretty stupid idea. I wanted a secret organization of people aiming for peace. If it even worked, it would break down eventually. Some evil bastard would take advantage of it, use it for his own purposes. It'd be nice though, wouldn't it? A group of selfless, well-meaning people with actual power trying to help others." He made a raspberry sound.

"Enjoying your job, Suki?" he asked, in reference to her position as a librarian. He knew he would of loved/hated it when he was her age. SO many books but so little room to expand the job.

At first Suki felt as if she should offer some kind words or something to the man, but kept her mouth shut. She really could warm up to the idea he’d presented her, she was just too cautious a person to get extremely committed until all of her questions were answered. Watching Goldeye for a long moment, she shrugged slightly. “It’s a means to an end if nothing else.” She said slowly. “There’s not really that much to do other than spend a few minutes picking up after all the students are out. But if it allows me to gain entrance to the Forbidden Forest for research I can handle it.” Leaning forward and wrapping her arms around her knees, she looked out over Hogsmeade. “Professor….do you think peace is really possible?”

"No," Goldeye said simply, scratching his nose. "There's always someone who gets greedy, angry, righteous. Someone does something stupid and it all starts. Peace is only something that is strove towards but can never be achieved because of the various flaws of human kind. Yet the fact that people do try to achieve it...I think it does say something positive about us. So long as people believe it can be achieved, that is enough."

He was glancing at the Astronomy Tower again, "Most of these concepts we cling to are simple mental constructs. They don't directly apply to us in the here and now. If a third-party was to see us now, it'd be impossible for him to tell we are in a war. It doesn't apply. It doesn't matter. We think it matters. But it doesn't."
