Background Story/ History: On Valentines Day, the 14th of February 1992, I was born in Melbourne, Australia, to Maria and Jonathan Darcy. I was four when my little sister, Juliet Macy Darcy, was born and when she was one my parents decided to move from Australia to London, England. My father is a doctor, and my Mother is an Artist and a musician. As my Mother had a strong passion for music she believed that Juliet and I were to learn music as soon as we could and she was to teach us. I was three years old when I picked up my first violin and loved it from the very minute I held the bow in my small little hand. When I started going to school, at the age of five, I could play the Piano and Cello as well. My teachers were amazed with my musical talent at such a young age. I took to music like other kids took to playing dolls or riding a bike. I went through most of primary school like an outcast. I didn't have many friends because I was different. When I was in Grade 3 a new boy came to my school. His name was Thomas and he was my first and only friend so far in my life. We did everything together and told each other everything. One day he told me something, something that muggles like me would never truly believe in. We were both in Grade 5 and it was a week after his birthday. It was really cold so we sat inside our classroom. I was busy with studying my music notation and I realised he was just sitting there, next to me, with a worried look on his face, staring into nothing. I looked into his dark blue eyes and asked him what he was thinking about.
'You'll won't believe me,' he said. 'I know you won't believe me.'
'Stop being silly. Of course I'll believe you!' I answered
'Okay...but I know I am right!' he began. 'I am a...I mean I won't be going to school next year.'
I almost cried with depression. 'Why not! You have too! I'll have no one...again!!'
‘I can't go to school next year because I'm a... I am a wizard.'
I stopped sobbing into to my hands and looked straight into his face.
'Haha, very funny! I thought you were serious,' I began wiping my eyes with the sleeve of my jumper. 'You don't actually think I would believe that!' I waited for him to smile, re-assurance that he was joking, but he looked worse than he had before.
'Look at this,' he said. He got out a letter and I quickly scanned it.
'Hogwarts? I am not silly Tom. Everyone knows that Wizards don't exist!'
'I told you that you wouldn't believe me,' he whispered.
'Well I don't! Wizards are NOT real! All that stuff belongs in our imaginations but NOT, and I repeat, NOT in real life!' I shouted, getting up out of my chair. Everyone in the room was looking at us so I walked away. I can't remember why felt so angry at him. Maybe it was because, at the time, I thought he was just making up excuses to go away and leave me forever. I didn't talk to him for a couple of weeks and I was so sad. Whenever I saw him I wanted to go and talk to him but his sad look reminded me of our fight. Finally it was my birthday. I woke up to my sister jumping up and down on my bed yelling 'WAKE UP!! WAKE UP!!'
I went down stairs and my mum was making breakfast in the kitchen. She stopped what she was doing and hugged me. 'Oh and you have mail' she said pointing at the table. I picked the small pile up and when I got to the bottom I saw a very familiar envelope. I opened it slowly.
"Anna Darcy
I am Pleased to inform you that you've been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry..."
'Oh my god!' I shouted as I ran to the door. 'I'll be back in a minute.'
I didn’t even give my Mum the chance to answer before I ran as fast as I could, straight to Tom's house. I knocked loudly on the front door and was greeted by his mother.
'Who on earth is at the door at this time in the morn...oh! Anna, come in, come in!'
I walked slowly indoors and looked around. This place was almost familiar to me as my home and I missed it so much.
‘Isn’t it your Birthday today? Tom’s been talking about it non-stop. But why are you here now? You should be with your family, dear!’ she said giving me a big squeeze. I hugged her back.
‘I have something more important to...’ but that’s where I stopped because I saw Tom with a wondering look to his face on the stairs, just looking at me. I stepped away from his Mother and she moved aside. I felt tears roll down my cheeks. I stepped closer to him as did he. That’s when he noticed what was in my hand. He came faster at me and I showed him the letter.
‘I...I am a...I am a,’ I began, sobbing with happiness. His eyes widened as he snatched the letter out of my hand.
‘You’re a witch!!!’ He exclaimed. I laughed.
‘I guess so,’ I whispered. His smile was so brilliant and when he hugged me I was the happiest eleven year old in the universe. I spent the rest of my day with Tom in the lounge room of his house while my parents were talking with his about what exactly this letter meant. My family were so proud of me and Tom was so excited.
‘Dad says it’s awesome! With ghosts and everything. Oh, and then there is Quidditch!’ he said.
‘Quidditch?’ I questioned. He grabbed my hand and we went directly to his backyard. That was also the first day I sat on a broom.
Now it’s my sixth year at Hogwarts. Tom and I are still the best of friends. Every Holiday I go to Music workshops to teach kids how to play music and I play alongside my mother in a orchestra in London.
My sister, Juliet, is, unfortunately, still a muggle. She was disappointed but she makes me write to her everyday and smuggle as much as I can home for her.
