Hunting on Thin Ice

Jakob looked up at the trees above them, wondering where exactly that Blind was now. Wait, high places? "Oh, that's clever." Jakob turned to Aurelia, smiling now, no longer afraid now that Revan was near. Aurelia was indeed beautiful, the eerie waves of moonlight seeping through the leaves above seemed to accentuate her beauty in a way that only Jakob - as a creature of the night by choice rather than necessity - could appreciate. He wondered what she would look like in daylight, but then remembered that the only way he would ever see her like that would be dead or dying.

"That creature is not the one I'm supposed to be meeting, as I'm sure you've worked out. Revan Haine will be coming to us, we should just stay here now. Perhaps you've heard of him on the political scene? Usually he would not reveal his status, or even flaunt the Blind like that, but he's often the target of attacks nowadays and it's best to stay guarded. I hope you will consider him for the content of his character rather than with a sort of automatic reverence because of his unique abilities. Some vampires don't." Aurelia seemed impressed by the Blind, so maybe Revan would be able to make use of her.

The bushes ahead of Aurelia and Jakob stirred slightly as the elderly blind woman stepped through. Her head turned slightly in Aurelia's direction as if considering her, then returned to look at Jakob. She stepped away from the group to join the other Blind in the forest, as she left, Revan entered the clearing.

"Evening, Fen." Revan said briefly, lowering his hood "Who's your new friend?" He looked over Aurelia, expecting himself to be recognized immediately. He didn't like that Jakob had company, they wouldn't be able to talk and he would have to keep up that annoying guise of the freedom-fighting antique store owner.

Jakob smiled, pleased to see Revan again. He didn't seem to take much notice of the Blind, he was used to their behavior for the most part. Jakob knew that Revan wasn't expecting him to have company, but he didn't seem annoyed. They would have plenty of time for talk - they always did.

Who's your new friend?

Jakob glanced at Aurelia. "I don't know," he admitted. "But she's friendly, and she's already had her supper tonight so she's not here to eat me, which is a plus." He could feel his confidence rising as he was now in control of the situation.

Revan Haine was not a name she was very familiar with - though she had heard others others a few times, she did not know what importance it held. Being a hermit could do that to you. Aurelia usually steered clear of even her own kind, since most of them seemed to have a sort of vendetta to settle. She was the live and let live sort, for the most part, not wanting to enter a war that she neither cared for, nor knew anything about. Besides, wars were a constant. Wait a millenia and you would find yourself in much the same place, with one sect battling ferociously against the other. People were never content.

The Blind, however, managed to grab her attention. If this Revan Haine controlled them, he was powerful indeed. Perhaps his war would not last quite so long. Perhaps he would not even consider it a war.

As he stepped through the bushes - and there was no doubt in her mind that it was who they had been discussing - she studied his appearance. He did not look very old, but his eyes held an age that she wasn't used to seeing. Most vampires did not live passed their hundredth year, yet he was obviously much older than that. His clothes would not fit the muggle world - unless, perhaps, it was Halloween - so he must not deal with them very often. Well, as more than a meal ticket, anyway. And his very stature screamed confidence. And that was hardly surprising considering his apparent age and the presence of the Blind. If she had them at her beck and call, she would mightily confident as well. However, despite all the cards in his favour, he still seemed wary. So he was not proud to the point of recklessness, then.

"It seems you are no longer in need of my company," she stated, her eyes lingering over Revan for a moment, before flickering over to Jakob. "Perhaps I should be getting along."

Powerful vampires, political uproars, and the Blind? No, thank you.

Revan didn't like how suddenly Aurelia was stepping away, as if his presence changed anything. Maybe that she now knew that Jakob had protection? Perhaps she had been expecting an easy feed? He felt a stab of anger but quickly smothered it. He was quite protective of Fen around other vampires, practically raising him from a young age. He would hate to see him misled.

"But Miss!" Revan objected politely. "We have done you to courtesy of knowing our names, it is only fitting that you return the gift." He smiled charmingly but not holding his hand out for a shake. People seemed to forget that women had to hold their hands out first. They were losing their ways.

Jakob frowned as his head flicked between the two. "Surely not!" He failed to understand why Aurelia would not at least share a conversation with Revan. He was obviously powerful, and he had lived a great deal longer than Aurelia, so was bound to know a thing or two. If she was afraid of him, then she would likely be useless for their cause, but even still it was wise to find supporters wherever the opportunity arose.

Well, there goes that plan. It seemed they both had other ideas for how she spent her evening. Jakob seemed alright - she didn't think he would attack her or ask Revan to do so. But Mr. Haine looked like he would just as soon kill her and have done with it. And she definitely didn't like the sinister way he spoke - polite, but with clear intent. She knew his request was little more than an order. And that irked her. He was no better than she was - perhaps a century or so older, but no better. And he didn't own her; she wasn't his subject.

But as long as those Blind were around, she had no choice but to do as they pleased. So, though it grated against her pride and went against every instinct she had, she stayed put, keeping her feet firmly on the ground. And as she replied to them both, she kept her tones as polite as Revan had, plastering a diplomatic smile on her lips.

"Very well, gentlemen," she replied softly. "My name is Aurelia Bathory. It's a pleasure to meet you."

White lies never hurt anyone, right? And she actually didn't mind Jakob... He seemed nice.

"A pleasure to meet you, Miss. Bathory," Revan gave her a little bow. "Revan Haine, as you already know, and if you ever need assistance, please contact me. If you wish to stay, please do. If not, we will not keep you. Myself and Fen have a lot of things to discuss." He noticed how Aurelia had been immediately alienated from the two of them, the general feeling in the air was for her to leave. He might have someone chase her up later for recruitment into the Party that was quickly being formed.

He hoped that Bathory would not go screaming about meeting Revan Haine mysteriously in the forest, though he doubted. Even if the woman was interested in politics, he didn't see any reason why she would want to undermine her own race's chance at equality. And perhaps dominance.
