Full Name: Legally and while in hiding his name is Jakob Rosenbell. Formerly Tolenka Bashmet (when in Russia) and Direnç Al-Fanari (birth name). His alias is The Desert Fox, but he is also known as Fen to those he is close to.
Date of Birth: September 26, 1978
Place of Birth: Istanbul, Turkey
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Appearance: Olive skin, dark short hair. Above average height, deep crimson eyes. Burns across his face, expected to heal within a few months.
Occupation: Revan’s Spy
---BACKGROUND---
Heritage: Half-Blood
Family: Parents, Sihâb and Melda Al-Fanari (mother deceased), Little half-sister Enise, and possibly other siblings from his father (at least one half-brother)
History: Direnç’s parents were poor merchants in the dying wizarding areas of Istanbul, Turkey. He is was the eldest of at least three children. His mother was a muggle-born, but his father was an avid blood purist.
When his parents were younger, they hooked up and Melda fell pregnant. Sihâb wanted to abort the baby, but Melda pleaded and begged him to allow her to keep it. She convinced him that she was pure-blooded, and they married so as not to live in sin.
At a young age, Direnç appeared to be a Squib. He showed little to no magical ability (Turkish wizards are trained in very basic magic by their fathers from the age of four), and could not find a wand which suited him. When Direnç was five, his father discovered that his wife was a muggle-born, and beat and abused both her and “her” son (he had since abandoned him), blaming her lineage for his lack of magical ability. He has vivid memories of her mother’s constant apologies to him for the situation he was born into, tears dripping down her face. She loved him dearly, and the feelings were returned. He felt a debt to her, and responsibility to take care of her.
Direnç was ambitious. He knew he was not a squib. His father would not teach him, so he was forced to teach himself, and once he was a little older he often ran away from home for knowledge and food. He was of no nobility, so was denied direct access to the local library. He managed to weasel his way in, doing ignominious tasks for his superiors, bribing his way in, and often resorting to breaking and entering.
He found he was actually quite skillful when he applied himself, and with proper training (his father was not exactly a skilled wizard), and was very good at Runes and Transfiguration. He forced himself to focus on charms (as they would definitely be most useful in his situation) and dabbled in curses and the Dark Arts. He began to build up his hate for the majority of people, for the pain they had put him through and making him do the things he had to to survive.
He also sought money to live off of (not satisfied with the food he received at home), and found it very difficult to get a job due to his age and facial disfigurements (courtesy of his father, again.) He had to resort to theft, and crime. His mother was essentially living on a small allowance (despite their business picking up), so he felt he had to support her, as well.
When his son was nine years old, Sihâb’s mistress fell pregnant. At first he was distraught, until he realized he would finally have a pure-blooded child. He managed to keep it secret from his wife for over half of the pregnancy – but eventually slipped during a fit of rage at his son, telling him that he would soon be replaced. Direnç promptly told his mother. Melda took her son and fled, fearing for their lives once the “superior” child was born.
By this point she had received quite a bad reputation thanks to her vicious husband, she found herself being accused of all sorts of crimes, diseases and general shame. She could not get a proper job because of this, and was forced to resort to prostitution. With the money they earned together, they earned enough to rent a one-bedroom apartment, with running water. When Direnç was 11, Melda gave birth to a baby girl named Enise, whom he considered very special. Their mother got sick shortly after giving birth, and died 3 years later, leaving Direnç to look after the pair of them.
When the situation became direr, Direnç decided he wanted to become an animagus, specifically a fox. Foxes were like a plague on their area; they were big scavengers and he would be able to blend in and hide easily. He focused almost entirely on this in his studies for two years, until he finally got it right. Over time he began to prefer his fox form, and would deliver food to his baby sister while in its form, carrying it his mouth. He was skilled at breaking into places and being deceitful.
Once, he discovered a hideout on the outskirts of town, while exploring and foraging. He was feasting on the stash of food inside, when its owner, a vampire by the name of Aalim Dizhwar, returned from his hunt. He caught the fox, and overpowered him. He saw him for what he was, an animagus, and was curious. They got to talking, and Aalim saw his distaste in the majority of humanity, and his infiltration skills. He decided to test him, and recruit him on his mission, to kill a powerful Turkish minister, who was horribly racist and believed in wizard superiority above all else. They succeeded, but were wanted criminals. At that point, his sister was capable of caring for herself (she was tough, as he was), so he decided to flee the country with Aalim, vowing someday to come back for her. The Turkish police soon found themselves following a cold trail.
The duo spent some further time in Minsk, where more advanced magic allowed Direnç (under the new alias of Tolenka) to hone his skills. He has become quite skilled in self-transfiguration and medicine, and has managed to clean up most of his scarring. Underneath, is left a rather handsome face.
Aalim, now going by the name of Revan Haine, had a lot of powerful friends in Russia (he was largely responsible for the large vampire population in Russia), and through his contacts and application, Tolenka also honed his skills in Occlumency, a skill that proved rather helpful, as a bounty was again placed on his head for various crimes. It was there that he gained a reputation as “The Desert Fox”. When the danger mounted, Fox decided that it was time to leave. Revan was safe from capture, but decided to flee also.
Revan decided that their next target was in Britain, but because of the war, they decided to hide out in the Czech Republic for a year and a half. When the word came of Voldemort’s death, Revan and his partner moved to Britain. Fox took the name of Jakob Rosenbell, and took a job at the Hogs Head.
((During the Roleplay Period - January 08 – April 09))
Jakob spent the first few months in Britain quietly preparing. He and Revan bought a small house with a yard in muggle Bristol with a magic-enhanced “bomb shelter” which served as Revan’s headquarters and living space. They had brought money with them into the country to help with initial costs, but still Revan and Jakob found themselves struggling to make ends meet. Jakob used his job at the Hog’s Head to gather general information, get a feel for the culture and to get access to some extra work he could do to earn extra money. Jakob spent most of his free time studying or hunting.
While out on a hunt at night, Jakob ran into a pair of vampiric sisters who were toying with a young animagus. Their names were Moira and Selene Vitrella, and their views on vampirism interested Jakob. He considered that they could be useful to their cause, so he passed on to Revan the name of the pub they owned together, which catered primarily for vampires.
Revan approached them at the pub while Jakob stood back and watched, disguised, as was usually the drill in such treacherous situations. He spotted a brunette witch who appeared to be spying on Revan, so he followed her out into the street and confronted her. She revealed herself to be Juliet Lee, the leader of the Death Eaters. Jakob told Juliet that he was an enemy of Revans, and ended up joining the Death Eaters in order to act as Revan’s spy. After they parted ways, Jakob found that Revan had been forced to kill the vampires and set the pub on fire to destroy any evidence. Jakob took the money from the till and helped evacuate the vampires inside.
Over the next few months, Jakob spent much of his time building his relationship with the Death Eaters, and also his relationship with a Veela by the name of Danielle Deleon. Jakob met Dani in The Leaky Cauldron, and posed as a rich foreigner new to England in order to gain the wealthy witch’s respect. This was often a costly decision on Jakob’s part, having to pay for expensive meals, clothes and hotel rooms, but was all part of a long term “investment” to get ahold of her fortune.
At the start of the 2008-2009 Hogwarts school year, Jakob quit his job at the Hog’s Head and began working with the Department of Magical Transportation as an Apparition examiner and trainer. He spent his spare time studying the castle and making use of the massive library they had there. It was around this time that he tricked Dani into marrying him; he told her that he loved her and that he would soon be deported if he did not find a wife. They were wed and lived together for several months, until Jakob killed her and claimed her massive fortune which provided Revan and himself with substantial financial backing.
Jakob continued spinning his wheels for some time in this role. The Death Eaters, led under Juliet’s cautious hand, were slow to move. Revan was similar; both were recruiting, plotting, and sewing seeds. Jakob continued doing what he could for Revan and what he needed to for the Death Eaters, which wasn’t a whole lot.
((The Two Year Jump – April ‘09 to April ’11 - Portions have been taken more or less from the plot summary and have been highlighted in italics.))
Then, in April 2009, the Death Eaters launched their attack on Hogsmeade, in which they ambushed and killed the Headmaster of Hogwarts at the time, Hunter Evans, then rioted and paraded his body through the streets while houses were burned to the ground around them. Jakob helped plan the event and was tasked with starting and preparing the fires. When the Aurors inevitably showed up, Jakob opted not to join in on the conflict; instead he gave in to his kleptomaniacal tendencies and looted from the homes. He soon found himself surrounded by Aurors and without a viable means of escape, so instead he took the cursed flames he was spreading from his wand and applied them to his face, leaving him with disfiguring scars so that nobody would recognise him.
He and nearly all of the other Death Eaters were captured and brought in to be tried by the Wizengamot. In the lead-up to the trial, Jakob managed to communicate to the Death Eaters that he would find a way to break them out of Azkaban; but they would have to deny having ever met him so that he would hopefully get away with a minimum security cell. They agreed, and the trial went forth as expected. The Death Eaters received a multitude of charges dealing with murder, arson and magical terrorism. Jakob, acting under another alias, escaped with a lesser sentence as he was only caught lighting fires and looting. He was also deemed an illegal immigrant.
Meanwhile, on the outside, Revan Haine was busy cleaning up the mess left by his right-hand-man and trying to communicate with him to organise an escape plan. Revan filed emergency leaves of absence to the Ministry and to Hogwarts. When it became apparent that Jakob was going to be spending time in Azkaban, these “holidays” turned into resignations.
Revan developed further contact with half-giant and Azkaban prison guard Hugo Stein. Hugo was a customer of Revan’s antique store and Revan had won his respect previously during conversations about equality for all races. Revan delicately built an alliance with Hugo, and Hugo agreed to help him get Jakob out of Azkaban.
Jakob began receiving messages hidden within his meals, which he would strain to read in the dark. He knew these were from Revan through Hugo, but the two never actually spoke beyond normal prisoner-guard interaction. Jakob had difficulty communicating back in forms other than very simple yes-or-no type responses. Hugo snuck Jakob extra food where he could, so that Jakob would be able to sustain his physical strength. Jakob knew this would be important as he would be without his own wand, so he made a point of working out as much as possible. Revan and Hugo spent the next few months researching, planning and communicating with Jakob when they got brief moments alone. Jakob carved runes into the back of his dinner, which Hugo was able to plant around the prison to deactivate the floating walkways and some other security features on command.
Eventually the time came when the plan was to come to fruition. Hugo smuggled Jakob (in fox form) out of his cell, in his robes (not especially difficult given how small Jakob was and how big Hugo was, but not especially pleasant either ), out into one of the equipment rooms. Jakob waited until a guard entered to fetch something, ambushed him and killed him in hand-to-hand in order to get a wand which would answer to him with some degree of reliability. Together, they slowly and secretly began breaking prisoners on the lower security levels out of their cells, taking out guards for wands where they could, until they built a strong enough makeshift group which could attack the high-security sector. With the help of Hugo’s set traps, they fought their way through the upper levels. The Death Eaters were out to kill, as they desperately needed wands and wanted revenge. It was said that as the escapees ran their way up the final leg to the Apparition Room, out of control Fiendfyre roared behind them, consuming the pursuing guards and straggling Death Eaters. Amidst all the chaos, someone still managed to cast the Dark Mark over the site. Most of Azkaban’s cells were busted open and there were heavy losses on both sides. Only half of the escapees actually made it to the Apparition room and out of the prison alive.
Despite their losses, the Death Eaters were still left with their largest free force since the months after Voldemort’s death; united in their shared experience and renewed faith in the ability of their kind, having just broken out of Azkaban from the inside. Jakob lied to them all about Hugo’s involvement, as he was a “half-breed” he was sure they wouldn’t be happy with it. Instead, he claimed that he killed a guard who entered his cell, took his wand and uniform, and then used the Imperius Curse on Hugo to help them escape.
There was a call for Jakob to be the new Death Eater leader, having successfully broken them all out of Azkaban. Others hated Jakob, blaming him for the deaths of the Death Eaters who failed to escape with them. Jakob responded by saying that those Death Eaters would have died in there otherwise, and that his escape plan would have been their best chance at freedom. He also told them that he had no interest in being leader, as Juliet was always more than capable despite the failures at Hogsmeade, and that his own campaign to kill Revan would always take priority. Jakob didn’t want to endanger himself any further, and Juliet seemed like she would be the best choice as he had plenty of experience dealing with her before (better the enemy that you know, than the enemy you don’t).
The Death Eaters focused on rebuilding their strength, influence and finances affected by their stay in Azkaban. They also needed new wands. The ministry knew that most of the Death Eaters were wandless, and the Death Eaters were afraid that any wandmakers would be protected against an attack. Groups of them began random attacks on Muggle-borns in order to kill them for their wands, hoping that the rules of wand ownership would give them back their power when their original owners were murdered. Half-Bloods (those considered “Blood Traitors” by the Death Eaters) were also killed, as many of them believed that stealing wands from Muggle-borns would get them nowhere since their magic had in turn been “stolen”, according to the propaganda from Voldemort’s time in power. Their results varied. There were also a few acts of terrorism similar to the Hogsmeade fires, or to the attack on the Quidditch World Cup prior to Voldemort’s return, but no large-scale combat. A few Death Eaters were captured and reimprisoned.
Jakob made an effort to remain low-key amongst the Death Eaters throughout all of this; for the most part the Death Eaters trusted him now. He told them that he was satisfied with the wand he had stolen during the Azkaban attacks, so that he didn’t have to participate in their random killings. In private, however, Jakob did kill for wands – but his targets were more specific; some opponents of Revan’s cause, blood purists or similar “scum of the Earth.” Around this point in time he was struggling with all of the murder he had been committing in the name of justice or the greater good, when there had been very little actual progress. As such, his murders were kept to a minimum and he has since settled on a wand he isn’t entirely happy with. This is frustrating for him, as it reminds him of his childhood when he was forced to learn magic with a wand that wasn’t “his”. This period of doubt and angst also caused him to lose control and get into a vicious duel with a Death Eater who had been badmouthing muggle-born women. Jakob ended up killing him too, and played it off as an Auror ambush.
Meanwhile, Revan had begun campaigning for changes to laws regarding Vampires and other non-wizard creatures. His focus was mainly on appealing to the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and certain politically minded groups who were likely to be sympathetic. Revan’s arguments were, for the large part, falling upon deaf ears. However, support was slowly growing.
As Jakob’s face was still horribly burnt, he was immediately recognisable as a Death Eater. He had to further distance himself from Revan and from the general public if he didn’t want to wind up back in Azkaban. This meant that he wasn’t able to aid in protecting Revan himself any longer. Luckily, by now, Revan had accumulated a small group of loyal followers, who escorted him on most of his public outings since he began his political career. When Revan was eventually attacked by a trio of hit wizards, Jakob was not present, but helped with the interrogation of the prisoner they captured. He told them that he was sent by Gordon Flintock, the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement who didn’t like what Revan was up to.
Realizing that Gordon Flintock was personally targeting him, Revan shifted gear in his political campaign. He began attacking the Department of Magical Law Enforcement instead, feeding the ministry more Death Eaters in chains through Jakob’s intel than they were capturing themselves. He publicly remarked that he was able to capture more Death Eaters single-handedly (he had the help of his followers, of course) than Gordon’s entire department was, because the ministry was “still too incompetent and too scared to do what needed to be done to clear up a mess which had been threatening lives for over twenty years now”. Many debates took place, and Revan Haine became a high profile political figure. Public opinion was divided; many wizards continue to hate and fear vampires, and those that don’t are torn between trusting Revan or not in the face of accusations about his history, his motives, and his supposed concealed agendas.
Revan decided that it would be appropriate to organise an experimental blood transfusion program for vampires at St. Mungos. As Revan positioned himself publicly as a struggling vampiric shopkeeper, the project was funded by “anonymous donations” which actually came from Jakob’s wealth he had acquired from Danielle Deleon. Jakob convinced the Death Eaters that they needed to shut down the program unless they wanted the country to be overrun by Vampires like in Romania. This was part of Revan’s plan of course – the death eaters attacked the subjects of the experiment and the program was shut down for fears of their safety. For Revan, though, the attack helped plant the image in the public’s mind that Revan’s opponents (read: most of the ministry) shared some similar ideals with Death Eaters.
Jakob is currently stuck between a rock and a hard place as the Death Eaters ramp up their opposition to Revan. He expects soon his position will be compromised. His scars are expected to fully heal within the next few months.
