Ok, I have a question which I've been trying to figure out for a long time. When do the Harry Potter books take place? I mean, I've read that Harry's 1st year was in 1992. But then JK Rowling said that Fred died in 1997, and since it was after New Year's the 7th book takes place in 1996-1997. Does anyone know anything about that?

Good question... I personally thought that HP was born in 1980, and the 7th book ended in '98... maybe she made a mistake? She is human too you know...lol

Perhaps JK Rowling is bringing modernness in her books for people to read it easier. I mean, I found it easier to relate things from the book in the newer ones rather than the old ones.

Ok I feel relly stupid now, I just notice that if Lily and James died in 1981, then Harry starts Hogwarts in 1991, so Fred died in 1998. So JK Rowling did make a mistake, made Fred's life one year shorter LOL!

I don't follow your logic, Loopy. Perhaps JK Rowling is bringing modernness in her books for people to read it easier. I mean, I found it easier to relate things from the book in the newer ones rather than the old ones. I think that is more due to the trio and the characters overall becoming older and thinking and acting more maturely. It could also be JKR becoming a better writer as she gets along - but I doubt modernness/relating to her readers was a deliberate thing.

Ok...if Lily and James died in 1981, that means Harry was born in 1980, so when he turned 11 and stared Hogwarts, it was 1991.
1991-92 : 1st year 1992-1993: 2nd year 1993-94: 3rd year 1994-95 4th year 1995-1996: 5th year 1996-97: 6th year 1997-98: 7th year.
You understand? I don't know how else to explain...Fred died near the end in book 7, right? So it means in 1997 or 1998, and since we know it was after christmas it means it was in 1998.
