You may have noticed in some of the plot summaries that we've mentioned an "election" coming up on Wizarding Redefined.
From what we can gather, the Ministry doesn't usually have elections, but we've thought long and hard about this and it seems to be the best way to approach the situation. Precise information on how the Ministry operates canonically is not available. There are a number of inferences which can be made based on tidbits dropped throughout the books, but nothing is clear and a lot of the assumptions contradict each other.
So, based on what seems to fit well but not completely correctly with the canon, and based on what works best for the site, we've created these rules:
It was mentioned in the plot that Kingsley was preparing for an election in July; meaning that is what he is planning to do but an election has not been called yet. At the moment this is looking to be postponed depending on how the situation suits Kingsley (and WR).
In the past I've also been roleplaying Kingsley (sparingly) off of this profile, but I'll be creating an actual character profile for him too.
When election time comes around, any human wizard born in Britain over the age of 17 may either vote or run for office.

So, based on what seems to fit well but not completely correctly with the canon, and based on what works best for the site, we've created these rules:
- The Minister of Magic is elected by the public, and serves a term for a maximum of five years. At least two months notice must take place before an election can be held.
- The Minister of Magic selects the head of each ministry department and has near-total control over the ministry.
- The Minister can be fired by the International Confederation of Wizards (like the UN) in extreme circumstances.
- The Minister also selects the Wizengamot. Once someone is a member of the Wizengamot, they generally keep that position for life. If a member of the Wizengamot is ever fired then it is usually cause for suspicion.
- In the event of the Minister of Magic's death or incapacitation, the Wizengamot selects a caretaker Minister of Magic until an election can be held.
