Full Name: Killian MacAdams
Date of Birth: July 27, 1987
Place of Birth: Belfast, Ireland
Gender: Male
Race: Wizard
Appearance:
Occupation: Shopkeeper
---BACKGROUND---
Heritage: Muggle-born
Family: Mother - Maeve Angus (deceased)
Father - Ciaran MacAdams (deceased)
Stepmother - Mackenna Cantorel (deceased)
Stepsister - Sky Cantorel
History: Killian's home life was relatively normal during his childhood; although his parents were never married, they had been together since their high school days. They fought on occasion - mostly about Ciaran's drinking - but overall they were happy, and things were good. When Killian was six, however, Ciaran was laid off from his job at the factory where he worked, and things began to go downhill. He and Maeve would argue almost daily about money, and the fact that Ciaran was drinking more heavily than he ever had before. Eventually Ciaran moved from alcohol to heroin, and when Maeve discovered that he was using and dealing, it sparked their biggest fight ever. Killian, who was seven at the time, was wakened by the screaming, snuck into the kitchen and witnessed Ciaran strike Maeve with a wrench and then break her neck. Before Ciaran noticed Killian, he ran back to his room and pretended he hadn't seen anything. For the next several years he pretended to believe Ciaran's story that Maeve had run off with another man.
For the next year, Ciaran became increasingly dependent on drugs, leaving Killian home alone for days at a time. Killian taught himself to cook and clean, and did his best to take care of himself. They moved from their apartment into a shabby townhouse on the outskirts of Belfast, Ciaran being unable to pay the rent, and a few months after Killian's eighth birthday, Ciaran met and married Mackenna Cantorel, who brought her four year old daughter Sky to live with them.
For a while, Killian thought that things were going to get better - Mackenna made an effort to take care of him and Sky, and even Ciaran got a job. Eventually though, things began to fall apart and Ciaran went back to his old tricks, taking Mackenna with him. Killian began to take care of Sky, getting her meals and making sure she was put to bed on time each night. Over time she came to view him as a combination brother and father; and the two loved each other dearly for all that they did not share blood.
Ciaran often cheated on Mackenna, sparking huge screaming fights which put Killian in mind of the same sort of fights he had witnessed between his own parents before Maeve had been murdered. He was terrified that Ciaran would do the same thing to Mackenna, and sat tense during each fight, ready to grab Sky and run out the door the second things turned violent. They never did however; Ciaran would merely slam out of the house and sometimes not return for weeks. Mackenna would whore herself out for drug money and Killian would be left to watch Sky.
On Killian's ninth birthday, they were evicted from their townhouse. During the next several years, they moved often, for neither Ciaran or Mackenna could hold down jobs due to their addictions and spent nearly all of their money on drugs.
At age eleven, Killian received his Hogwarts letter. He was both shocked and dumbfounded, for although he had had any number of weird "magical" incidents growing up, (once when Ciaran had hit him and seemingly broken his jaw, it had mended miraculously overnight and not required him to have it wired), he had never considered the possibility that he was a wizard. He had decided not to attend the school, as fascinating as it sounded; he could not bear to abandon Sky. Sky, however, argued fiercely with him and in the end he agreed to go. Sky herself had exhibited several of the "magical" signs that Killian had, and both of them hoped that she would be a witch, too.
So Killian went off to Hogwarts for his first year, returning on holidays to see how Sky was doing. She was fine, she insisted; he had taught her how to cook and do laundry, and she got herself to school and back without much trouble. Their parents hardly noticed his absence, and when Killian was home they ignored him completely. This suited Killian just fine, because he did not miss Ciaran's punches.
Things continued to go well, until the summer after Killian's third year. He came home for the summer to find Sky changed somehow; he could not put his finger on it but she was much quieter than usual and there was a look in her eyes that he didn't understand. While this bothered him, Sky insisted that everything was fine, and would not go into any more detail about it. In one of his letters from Sky, she wrote that Mackenna had OD'd on heroin and died; secretly, Killian had rejoiced, but at the same time worried even more about Sky being left alone with Ciaran. The next summer, Sky was worse. He returned home after school to find her covered in cuts - self-inflicted cuts. Every visible inch of her skin from the shoulders down had been attacked. He demanded answers from her, but had received only shrugs and blank stares.
Sky received her Hogwarts letter that summer; both she and Killian cried with relief over the fact that she was, indeed, a witch. Killian took her shopping to Diagon Alley and watched over her for the rest of the summer. She stopped cutting, at least in places that he could see, and her wounds healed over leaving deep scars. She still would not tell Killian why she had done it, leaving Killian stressed and confused; but at least Sky would be coming to Hogwarts with him, and he would not have to abandon her to Ciaran once more.
He kept a close, watchful eye on her over her first year at Hogwarts; she blossomed out that year, away from the influence of Ciaran, and was altogether bright and happy. Near the end of the year, she began to withdraw again, dreading the prospect of going home. Their first night back, Killian was wakened in the night by a strange noise coming from Sky's room; going to investigate, he found Sky being raped by Ciaran.
Furious, Killian stabbed Ciaran in the throat with a hypodermic needle; an air bubble reached Ciaran's heart and killed him. Killian ran Sky to the hospital. Ciaran's murder was put down as self-defense, and after Sky was released from the hospital, she and Killian were placed in a foster home. During their stay, Killian decided that the next summer, they would not return to the Muggle world; they would find themselves a place in Hogsmeade, or maybe Diagon Alley. Killian had found a stash of nearly three thousand pounds in Ciaran's room the night of his death, and would use that to provide for them until he could get a job.
Unfortunately, no one would allow Killian to rent a place on account of his being a minor. For part of the summer after Sky's second year they were forced to live at the Leaky Cauldron. Killian got a job working full-time at Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor in the summers, and Florean, who was a kind-hearted man and couldn't bring himself to turn them in to the Ministry or the Muggle authorities, took them in and allowed them to live in the tiny flat over his shop. The story was given out that Killian and Sky were a niece and nephew of his. Killian was sharp-witted and a quick liar, and whenever any suspicious adults would question him as to where his parents were, he was able to come up with a story to satisfy them. Both he and Sky made a solemn pact never to admit to anyone that they were orphans and homeless, and told the story around Hogwarts that their parents worked abroad and were often away from home.
After Killian had graduated and turned seventeen at the end of July, the summer after Sky's third year, he applied to become Sky's legal guardian. He began working again at Florean Fortescue's, until Florean himself was dragged off, seemingly by the Death Eaters. Unable to keep the shop running, Killian was forced to close it and grieved the loss of his mentor bitterly. He ended up working in a dark little shop in Knockturn Alley to pay the bills and renting a dank flat over top. He was able to stay out of the path of the Death Eaters when they came hunting for Muggle-borns by giving them the same story he and Sky had used for years about Florean being their uncle. Sky was given the same protection as him by dint of being his "sister" (although no one ever knew that they were only related by marriage.) After Voldemort was defeated, Florean's will came out and it was discovered that he had left his shop, and all of his live savings, to Killian and Sky. Killian promptly reopened it, keeping the name of Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor out of respect to the kind man who had taken them in.
