I think there should be a board where members can set up plots for their characters with others, instead of just leaving these topics to the general board. That way less threads will go un-noticed and stuff and I just think that it's an easyer way to get your character going.
Also, what if the names were color coded acording to house. I know a lot of other HP boards do that and I just find it kind of cool and almost convienient. It's easyer to tell who's who. Though I understand why you wouldn't want to do that...it'd be a lot of work I guess. Still just an idea.
Perhaps if you made your advertising board guest friendly and wrote an ad for the site you'd be able to get more exposure and more members. I know a lot of sites that have advertising boards that are guest friendly, but if you were to advertise there they have to be able to post here. Sometimes it's just easyer than affilating. All you'd have to do is throw a link at the top of your plot and call it 'our ad.'
Just one last thing, I think it'd be way more convinient for members if the application template was also posted in code at the bottom of the page with out all the suggestions. So it'd be like: Full Name: Date of Birth: instead of: Full Name: If you're really having trouble coming up with a name, consider a name generator or flick through baby naming websites. Date of Birth: Please use full format to avoid confusion (eg. 12th June 1990 instead of 12/6/90 or 6/12/90)
Just a couple thoughts is all.

I think there should be a board where members can set up plots for their characters with others, instead of just leaving these topics to the general board. That way less threads will go un-noticed and stuff and I just think that it's an easyer way to get your character going. I've actually been considering this lately, but I don't think that threads get particularly ignored in The Lounge... it's not like it's a particularly booming board, and stuff stays on the first page of it for ages. The Character Adoption added recently is meant to help make it easier to "get your character going". I'm not ruling out a board like the one you suggested though. It's not the work that I don't like the idea of, I just don't like the idea of assigning houses to member ranks. There's the obvious design issues... bright blue, green, yellow and red names everywhere... Then what do you do with Adults? The logical choice is that you end up giving all of the professions colours (Aurors Purple, Death Eaters Green, etc.) and then there's additional conflicts that arise from that (Snape from the old site comes to mind, being a Professor, a Death Eater and an Order member... he should technically have three ranks and three colours). What we had on the old TWOM was a horrible mess of inconsistent member ranks, some of which were moderators, some of which counted as Staff (in the Info Center, while in Maintanence Mode, etc.), and with different assortments of stars and coloured names: And since some members were counted as staff when they really weren't, and some had "staff stars", some members thought that they were somehow above everybody else when they really weren't. I know a lot of that can be fixed with proper organization, but it's just another contributing factor to why I don't think it's a wise move. Not to mention the security issues - I would have to give Global Moderators the power to assign ranks to members, and unless we wanted it to be a real pain in the arse, the power to MODIFY ranks, including all staff privileges. Now, I'm not saying I don't trust Revan and Jaden, but on principle, I never give out more power than what is necessary. Additionally, the more people who have the power to modify and assign member groups, the less secure the site is (anyone remember Laurance from TWOM? I'd rather avoid that issue again). Not to mention I also like the post ranks we have now. Sorry, but it's just not something that's going to happen (I know it's just a suggestion, but I'm giving a detailed explanation anyway, since a lot of sites do this and I really don't think it's a good idea.) How would allowing guests to advertise on our site get us more members? And producing written ads and such are on my literal to-do list, trust me. (Though they are near the bottom - other 'domestic' things that need addressing come first). We actually used to have downloadable Microsoft Word templates of our character profile template a couple of months ago... a few different versions (one with comments, one with spaces so it was printable and writable, etc.). I think we'll do this again sometime in the future, too (again, it's on the to-do list ).

I agree with James. Like, the whole ranking option on this site is something like a reward for beign active. I mean, I like the stars going up as eacch post is increased. ^.^
The only way we could do that for any site is make a member number limit, and guest number limit. That is how sites are grown.

Like, guest sites must have at least... lets say... 60 member, and 20 guests average per day? Therefore, our advertisers will only be those sites that have traffic running through it.
Do you get what I mean?

I think you're confusing guests posting advertisements, with affiliates.
